“I need to assess all aspects of your relationship.” Magnolia Pictures has unveiled the first official trailer for The Assessment, an entrancing intellectual sci-fi film that marks the feature debut of superbly talented filmmaker Fleur Fortune. This originally premiered at TIFF 2024 last year, and it also played at the London, Stockholm, and Sitges Film Festivals in the fall. It’s opening in theaters in March. Set in a near future when parenthood is strictly controlled, a couple’s seven-day assessment for the right to have a child unravels into a psychological nightmare. The movie stars Elizabeth Olsen and Himesh Patel as a couple living in the near future, a climate ravaged Earth where parenting is controlled and approved by the government. They request to have a child and then Alicia Vikander shows up as their “assessor”, putting them through this exceptionally fascinating and disturbing seven day trial. The cast includes Minnie Driver, Indira Varma, Charlotte Ritchie, Nicholas Pinnock, Leah Harvey, and Anaya Thorley. I really loved this film, so much so that it ended up on my Top 10 of 2024 even though it’s only getting actually released this March in theaters.
