“I bow before you…” The masterpiece returns to the big screen! GKids has revealed a brand new IMAX re-release trailer for Princess Mononoke, celebrating the iconic 40th anniversary of Studio Ghibli. First released in 1997, the film set huge box office records in Japan and was the first Ghibli movie to be released in the US with an English dub (in 1998) though it didn’t do very well at the time. The new 4K restoration of the film will be shown in both original Japanese language with subtitles & English dubbed versions in IMAX theaters later this month. Set in the Muromachi period, the story follows Ashitaka, a young Emishi prince who journeys west to cure his cursed arm and becomes embroiled in the conflict between Irontown and the forest of the gods, as well as the feud between Lady Eboshi and a human girl raised by wolves named San. With a score by renowned composer Joe Hisaishi. The original Japanese voice cast features Yōji Matsuda as Ashitaka, Yuriko Ishida as San, Yūko Tanaka as Lady Eboshi, and Kaoru Kobayashi as Jigo. The film currently has a 93% rating on RT, though I think the 4.4 average on Letterboxd more accurately shows how beloved this movie is and will always be. Nothing like experiencing it on IMAX – don’t miss this chance. // Continue Reading ›
